Angono is a town in the province of Rizal, located about 30 km east of Manila. Known as the ‘Arts Capital of the Philippines,’ it is a haven of artistry and home to two national artists, Lucio San Pedro, a musical composer, and Carlos ‘Botong’ Francisco, poet and muralist. Yet another discovery which has placed Angono in the archaeological map is a group of figures carved on a rock surface in a mountainside, which are known to be 3,000 years old and are considered to be the country’s oldest known artworks and a national treasure. These ‘petroglyphs’ suggests that the people of Rizal and Laguna may have been descendants of the cavemen whose love for the arts are exemplified in their music, paintings and craftsmanship. A visit to Angono will first take you the site of the petroglyphs and later in the town proper where the galleries and homes of notable artists will be visited.
